Similarity Measurement
I am interested in the development of methods for the measurement of similarity in ill-structured databases, namely the comparison of open-ended subjective judgments.
I have collaborated with Peter P. Wakker in the development of the Metric-Frequency (MF) Similarity (Sales & Wakker, 2009). We have developed the MF Calculator, a web-based tool for the calculation of similarity that implements the MF algorithm (see the MF Calculator area in this site).
Next step in this research line is testing the MF measure in several areas of behavioral sciences.

Psychotherapy Research
A more specific area of interest is Psychotherapy Research. Because of my background in systemic family therapy, I follow a scientist-practitioner perspective, i.e., I am interested in combining clinical practice and research. My work is targeted towards the development of research tools and methods that can be implemented as part of the routine of mental health or psychosocial services.
Within a project financed by FCT, we have created the IPPS (Individualized Patient-Progress System), a web based monitoring system that gives therapist feed-back on nomothetic and idiographic outcome change measures.
Next steps will be testing the IPPS as a change process research tool and for service evaluation.

African Studies
More recently, deriving from my involvement in the Master of Family Therapy and Community Therapy in Mozambique, I am interested in the Psychology of the African Family and its implications on mental health.
